First of all, not all ads work. Good ads work! What I propose is only good advertising work on general level (Including all kinds of ads - prints or TV ).
Economical situation of small business marketers proves that good advertising gives benefits to its owner. The absence war and finding many cures and vaccinations provided to growth of the population worldwide. The fact caused increase of consumers  demand. Thats why in the era of capitalism so many people started to open their own companies. Every success ended with new player on the market and then the race started. Advertising changed the way of competing  on open market. Small or big companies, they all started to advertise and to take care of their image by using PR agencies.
Consumers wanted to be inform about products which they buy and its advantages. They understood that companies should compete for their money. 
On the other hand in the 1990s advertising become a part of art. Printing calendars  with artistic pictures such like  Pirelli or making some exhibitions to prove that marketers take care about painters and sculptures or New Age  artists. 
Thats why, even if commercials surround us everywhere and sometimes cheat, Im still the greatest  fun of them. all in all, isn't it nice to see some colorful billboards on our way to school ?
